In the beautiful county of Hertfordshire, the Lady Charlotte Radcliffe has reached the imminent age of marriage. Her father, the estimable Lord Radcliffe, who is in poor health, has proclaimed she must marry a suitor within forty-five minutes of their estate so as not to unduly grieve her mother. When they draw up a list of suitable suitors for her, Charlotte is delighted to find the recent widower, the Earl of Buckland, at the top of their list. Believing a good marriage is more of station and security than attraction or love, Charlotte proceeds with her parents' plan to make her the Earl’s second wife. Yet when Guy Lancaster, the family’s former tutor, unexpectedly arrives in Hertfordshire, he laughs at her geographical approach to marriage and challenges her to let her heart, and not her lists, decide her future.
The Trouble With The Earl is a lighthearted, sweet Regency romance that takes place in the same towns and neighborhoods where Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy live, who also make appearances in the novella. In the spirit of the time frame, it is a genteel romance where only the tea is steamy.

I found this short book to be too boring to finish. Even the tie into Pride and Prejudice wasn't enough to induce me.The heroine wasn't exactly a gold-digger but was coming very close to the line. She didn't want to marry to begin with but her parents were insisting, and her mother insisted the man reside within a certain radius of the family home. This 'charming' family spend an afternoon making a list of eligible neighbors.
The arrival of one of their sons and his former tutor sets the stage. The heroine has grown up and has a large dowry, and the former tutor has inherited property. He now is on the same social footing as the heroine.
She says she cares nothing about marrying for love; she just wants to marry local and someone of her status. She wants to be able to visit her childhood home frequently -- as though she had never left - and to be able to sit and sketch all day.
I found the heroine to be a snob, mercenary and ghoulish. She adds the name of a neighbor the same morning his wife dies. His estate is beautiful and just down the road -- she says she is merely being practical. Ugh.
The hero is quite taken with her looks and her supposedly playful personality. From what I read she didn't have that sort of disposition.

Trouble With The Earl edition by Olivia Kane Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I liked the story enough, but have to say that it felt like the author tried too much to sound like Jane Austin, though she didn't quite succeed. It was a fun concept that her characters had interaction with Lizzy Bennett and others from Pride and Prejudice, but it didn't actually work well in the story.
The plot was interesting enough to stand by itself and I wish the author had simply written the story as herself, not trying to emulate Ms. Austin or borrow her characters. I think it would have read more naturally and could have been a more enjoyable read.
I love this Regency and highly recommend it to readers who enjoy historical romance. There is even a nod to Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice with the locale and a few familiar characters playing a small background role in this story.
I read Regency period stories frequently and this one, with its characters close to the Pride&Prejudice characters is interesting. I did have issue with an Earl, no matter his financial suffering, showing interest in another woman weeks after the death of his young wife. This was not to be done, especially in his country estate. Also, the character Charlotte isn't a warm, or even nice person. She comes across as younger than 19, shallow and quite judgmental. I understand that love didn't rate high in the 1800's as an essential ingredient for marriage but to make a list of potential husbands nearby seems especially mercenary. Her brothers former tutor doesn't make the list even though he has inherited a large and quite prosperous estate. She actually says she now must be nicer to him as his fortune has changed. Lizzy Bennett should have told her love is most important.
Have you heard of miss Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy? Well this is a lovely stroll through that time period. A short yet delightful romance! Great light reading that holds your attention. G rated for GOOD! Enjoy.
I did enjoy this book. I consider it a soft read, which we all need every now and then. I did enjoy this book and would recommend it.
Well written, delightful reading. Another historical where you find out more of how the 'upper' crust society is more concerned with money & being provided for than love. A story where you want to jump in and talk some sense to those people - ok, I do get into these stories!
Nice little romance story that meshes well with Pride and Prejudice. I'm not really a romance fan so I can't judge on that point, but it was engaging enough to keep me entertained. I like the writing style and characterization and the pacing was okay except where Charlotte is ordering Guy around all afternoon, so I would recommend it for a break from heavier tomes.
